GAMER’S ROAD TO ARMAGEDDON

Complex, a magazine for guys that covers such topics as news, style, music, sneakers(!), sports, pop culture, rides (cars and motorcycles, I presume), tech, art and design, girls (okay, I get that) and video games, put out a list of the top 10 “Best End of the World” video games. For purely technical reasons, here are the bottom five of the top 10. (huh?)

Now, I’m not a video gamer. I once got hooked on Tetris and almost needed a lobotomy to free myself of its evil and insidious grasp. But, I digress. My sons are video gamers and will always buy the newest version of Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Resident Evil, Call to Duty and so on. Consequently, what little I know about video games comes second hand or, maybe, by osmosis.

Anyway, here’s the list of the “best” End of the World games:

10. Advance Wars: Day of Ruin. Wow, sounds like fun, fun, fun. Apparently a re-envisioned game, it prompted the reviewer to write: “A story about warring nations struggling to survive after a meteor slaughters most of mankind is a pretty big thematic shift from all prior titles.”

9. Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Phantasia. Apparently, this is a combination of two older games re-imagined. The reviewer wrote: “While Lloyd (the hero, I think) is successful in uniting the two worlds as one, he also creates mass conflict, which leads into the Wii-only sequel Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. All of this actually sets up a massive war that weakens society even further. Thousands of years down the line after this war, a meteorite slams into the planet, killing most people. It is here that after a few generations, Tales of Phantasia starts.” Whatever, dudes!

8. Marvel vs. Capcon 3. “Technically, if you really want to get down to it, Marvel vs Capcom 3 has the most depressing world ending event in this entire list, which not only sees the destruction of Earth absolutely, it sees the destruction of both the Marvel and the Capcom universes!”

7. Indigo Prophecy. “As far as the end of the world, it depends on one of the three endings. In one, lead hero Lucas gets his cop girlfriend pregnant, an evil web-base organization called The Purple Clan unleashes robots onto the planet while the Sun is wiped out and the temperatures drop, killing millions of people while the rest are slaughtered.” We be havin’ some fun now!

6. Mother 3. The bad news? This game is only available in Japan. The good news? “Mother 3…(is) one of the most depressing and heart wrenching games of all time. Dead moms and twin brothers, sociopathic children locked away for all eternity in a box, it’s all pretty horrific stuff painted up in a friendly 16-bit aesthetic.” Holy crap! This is another good reason NOT to play video games.
